Short answer: an app’s revenue is roughly active users × the share who pay × what each paying user spends, minus store fees and running costs. Most apps earn little and a small share earn a great deal. What separates them is rarely the idea. It is usually retention: how many users are still active after 30 and 90 days.

This guide shows how apps make money in 2026, gives you a formula to estimate your own app’s revenue, works through three examples, and explains how long a new app typically takes to pay back what it cost to build.

Why most apps earn less than their founders expect

App stores are crowded, and a download is not a customer. Many people install an app, open it once and never return. Revenue comes from the people who stay, and only a small share of those ever pay. Founders who plan around download numbers tend to be disappointed. Founders who plan around retained, paying users tend to make better decisions about features, pricing and marketing from day one.

The good news is that the maths is simple. Once you know the few numbers that matter, you can estimate what an app might earn before you build it, and test those assumptions cheaply with a focused first version.

The ways apps make money

Model How it works Best for
Subscription Recurring monthly or yearly payment for ongoing value Fitness, education, productivity, content, B2B tools
Freemium Free core, paid upgrades or limits lifted Tools and utilities with a clear premium tier
In-app purchases One-off purchases of items, credits or content Games, dating, creative apps
Advertising Paid by advertisers per view or click High-volume, free consumer apps
Transaction fees A commission on each sale or booking Marketplaces, delivery, booking, payments
Paid app One upfront price to download Niche professional tools; rare today
Indirect revenue The app drives sales, loyalty or saves cost elsewhere Retailers, restaurants, service businesses, internal apps

Many successful apps combine two models, for example a free tier with ads and a paid tier without them. Start with one model that fits how your users already expect to pay, and add a second only when the first is working.

A simple formula to estimate your app’s revenue

Monthly revenue = monthly active users × paying share × average monthly spend per payer

Then subtract:

  • App store fees: Apple and Google both charge small developers 15 percent on their first $1 million of revenue a year, and the standard rate above that. Subscription renewals are charged at 15 percent or less, depending on the store and country. The rules have changed in several markets, so check the current terms on Apple’s Small Business Program page and Google Play’s service fee page.
  • Payment fees for sales outside the stores, typically 2 to 4 percent.
  • Running costs: hosting, third-party APIs, AI usage, support and maintenance.
  • Marketing: the cost to acquire each user, which often decides whether an app is profitable at all.

Worked examples

Subscription app

20,000 monthly active users, 4 percent subscribe at $9.99 a month: 800 × $9.99 = about $7,990 a month. After a 15 percent store fee, about $6,790. Whether that is a business depends on what it cost to acquire those users and how long subscribers stay.

Ad-supported app

100,000 monthly active users who each see about 60 ads a month: 6 million impressions. At an effective rate of $3 per thousand impressions, that is about $18,000 a month. Rates vary widely by country, format and audience, so treat this as a range rather than a forecast.

Marketplace app

2,000 bookings a month at an average of $50 with a 12 percent commission: $12,000 a month, before payment fees and the cost of supporting both sides of the market.

How long does an app take to pay back?

Payback is the build cost divided by monthly profit. Take the subscription example above. If the app cost $40,000 to build and runs at $1,500 a month for hosting, support and updates, it nets about $5,290 a month before marketing. That pays back the build in roughly eight months, but only if acquiring those 20,000 active users cost very little.

If each paying subscriber cost $40 to acquire through ads, the 800 subscribers cost $32,000 on their own, and payback stretches past a year. This is why lifetime value against acquisition cost is the number serious investors ask about first. A healthy app earns at least three times more from a user over their lifetime than it spent to win them.

What decides how much an app earns

  • Retention: an app that keeps 30 percent of users after a month can afford to acquire them; one that keeps 5 percent usually cannot.
  • The value of the problem solved: people pay for apps that save money, earn money, save time or matter deeply to them.
  • Pricing and packaging: annual plans, free trials and a clear premium tier often lift paid conversion compared with a single monthly price.
  • Market and platform: spending per user differs a lot between countries and between iOS and Android.
  • Acquisition cost: organic growth, referrals and app store search keep this low; paid ads alone rarely do.

Apps that earn without charging users

For many businesses, the app itself is not the product. A restaurant app that makes reordering easier, a retailer’s loyalty app or a field-service app that cuts paperwork can pay for itself without a single in-app purchase. Measure these by the extra orders, repeat visits or hours saved. For example, an app that saves 20 staff an hour a day each is worth far more than its build cost within the first year. Our guide to why your business needs a mobile app covers this side in more detail.

How to increase your app’s revenue

  1. Fix onboarding first. Most users decide in the first session whether an app is worth keeping.
  2. Test pricing with trials, annual discounts and tiered plans.
  3. Use notifications carefully to bring people back for something useful, not just to remind them the app exists.
  4. Add a second revenue stream only when the first is working, for example ads for free users plus a paid ad-free tier.
  5. Measure everything: conversion, retention by cohort and lifetime value against acquisition cost.

What it costs to build an app that can earn

A focused MVP typically costs $15,000 to $40,000 and a full product with accounts, payments and an admin panel $40,000 to $100,000. Plan roughly 15 to 20 percent of the build cost per year for maintenance. See the app development cost guide for a full breakdown. Building the MVP first lets you test the paying share and retention with real users before you commit to the larger budget.

Frequently asked questions

How much do free apps make?

Free apps earn through ads, in-app purchases or a paid upgrade. A rough estimate is monthly active users × ad impressions per user × the ad rate per thousand, plus purchases from the small share who pay.

How much does Apple or Google take?

15 percent for most small developers on their first $1 million a year, the standard rate above that, and 15 percent or less on subscription renewals, with differences by country.

How many downloads do you need to make money?

Downloads matter less than active, retained users. An app with 10,000 loyal users who pay can earn more than one with a million downloads that nobody opens twice.

How long does it take for an app to become profitable?

Commonly one to three years, depending on acquisition costs, retention and pricing. Validate demand with an MVP before investing in a full product.

Which app category makes the most money?

Games and subscription apps in areas like health, fitness, dating and productivity lead consumer spending. Business apps often deliver the best return through cost savings and repeat sales rather than direct revenue.
